City or coast: where is recovery easiest?

Most UK patients having All-on-6 in Turkey go to Istanbul, Izmir or Antalya. Good clinics exist in all three. This article looks at a narrower question: where are the days around surgery easiest for someone who is swollen, tired and on soft food?

Short answer

For a full-arch recovery stay, the practical factors are a short airport transfer, a quiet hotel close to the clinic, easy access to a pharmacy and soft food, and a climate that suits you. Antalya's airport is close to the city and most clinics, and the coast offers a calm setting. Istanbul offers the widest choice but longer transfers and heavy traffic. Izmir sits between the two. The right clinic matters more than the city.

When people compare Turkish cities for dental treatment, they usually compare clinics, prices and reputations. Those matter most. But for a full-arch case, there is another, more practical question that rarely gets asked: where will the few days around surgery be easiest? You will be travelling, then swollen and tired, then making several short trips to the clinic, then flying home. The city shapes all of that.

What makes a good recovery base

  • A short airport transfer, especially on the way home after surgery.
  • A hotel close to the clinic, because you will go back for checks.
  • Calm surroundings, somewhere you can rest and walk gently.
  • Easy access to soft food and a pharmacy.
  • A climate that suits you in the month you travel.
  • Direct flights from your part of the UK.

Istanbul

Istanbul has more clinics than anywhere else in Turkey and the widest choice of flights, with year-round direct routes to many UK airports. It is one of the world's great cities, and the second trip in particular can be a chance to see it. For the first trip, the challenges are distance and traffic. The main airport is a long way from many parts of the city, and journeys across Istanbul can take far longer than the map suggests. If you choose Istanbul, choosing a hotel very close to the clinic matters even more, and allowing generous time for the airport on the way home is wise.

Izmir

Izmir is a large, relaxed city on the Aegean coast, with a seafront promenade and a mild climate for much of the year. It has fewer direct UK flights than Istanbul or Antalya, so some patients connect. For a recovery stay it offers a calmer pace than Istanbul, with city conveniences close to hand. Resort towns along the Aegean coast, such as Kuşadası, Bodrum and Marmaris, are a further drive away.

Antalya

Antalya is on Turkey's Mediterranean coast. Its airport sits on the eastern edge of the city, so the drive to the centre and to many clinics is short, which makes a real difference on the day you fly home after surgery. The city has a long seafront, an old town and resort areas to east and west, and in spring and autumn the weather is often ideal for gentle walks while you recover. In July and August it is very hot, and many patients prefer other months. Direct flights from the UK are plentiful in the main season and fewer in winter.

Our guide to All-on-6 in Antalya has more on the city, and where you stay covers hotels.

Where to stay within the city

In any city, the most important choice is the distance between the hotel and the clinic. On the first trip you may go to the clinic on several days: for the consultation and scan, for surgery, for the fitting of the temporary teeth and for a check before you fly. A hotel a few minutes away by car turns each of those into a short hop. A beautiful resort an hour away turns them into an ordeal. Many clinics book hotels nearby as part of their package for exactly this reason.

Food, pharmacies and everyday needs

After surgery you will want soft food that is easy to find: soups, yoghurt, rice dishes, eggs, mashed vegetables, puddings. All three cities make this easy, and Turkish cooking has plenty of suitable dishes, from lentil soup to rice pudding. What differs is the distance from your hotel. A hotel with a restaurant that will prepare soft food, or a supermarket a few minutes' walk away, saves effort in the first two days. Pharmacies are common in every Turkish city and are marked with a red “E” sign for eczane; remember that GOV.UK says British prescriptions are not accepted there, so bring enough of your own medicines.

Getting around during the stay

On the first trip, most of your journeys will be between the hotel and the clinic, ideally by the clinic's transfer. Beyond that, you may want a short walk each day once the first swelling has passed. A seafront promenade, a park or a quiet street near the hotel is ideal. Long excursions, boat trips and busy markets are best left for before surgery or for the second trip. If you have limited mobility, ask the clinic about step-free access at both the hotel and the clinic, and about the type of vehicle used for transfers.

Weather and the month you travel

Heat is not dangerous after implant surgery, but it is uncomfortable when your face is swollen, and it makes it more important to drink plenty. Cold, grey weather is not a problem either, but some patients find a mild, bright climate helps their mood during recovery. Think about the month of each trip: the first may be in spring, and the second, months later, in summer or winter. For planning purposes, spring and autumn are popular with many patients in all three cities.

The clinic still comes first

It is easy to be swayed by photographs of beaches and minarets. Keep in mind that for most of the first trip you will see the hotel room, the clinic and the road between them. None of this should outweigh the choice of clinic. A first-rate surgeon in a city with a long transfer is better than a mediocre one beside the airport. Use the city question as a tie-breaker, and as a guide to planning the logistics once you have chosen. Our checklist for choosing a clinic in Turkey covers the things that matter more.

Our view

As a clinic in Antalya, we are not neutral, and we say so. We think Antalya makes the days around surgery about as easy as they can be: a short drive from the airport, a hotel close to the clinic and a calm place to recover between appointments. But we would rather you chose a city because it suits you than because we said so.

At Precious Dental the clinic is in Yeşilbahçe, Muratpaşa, a short drive from Antalya airport. The package includes 4 hotel nights on the first implant visit and 5 on the second, with airport and clinic transfers.

A quick decision guide

  • If you want the widest choice of clinics and flights, and do not mind traffic: Istanbul.
  • If you want a relaxed city on the Aegean: Izmir.
  • If you want a short airport transfer and a seaside setting for recovery: Antalya.
  • In every case: choose the clinic first, then a hotel close to it.

Common questions

Is Istanbul or Antalya better for All-on-6?

Both have good clinics. For the recovery stay, Antalya's short airport transfer and quieter setting suit many patients; Istanbul offers more choice and more flights but longer journeys across the city.

How far is Antalya airport from the clinics?

Antalya airport is on the eastern edge of the city, and many clinics are a short drive away. Precious Dental, in Muratpaşa, is around a 20-minute drive in normal traffic.

Is it too hot to recover in Antalya in summer?

July and August are very hot. Heat is not dangerous after implant surgery if you stay cool and drink plenty, but many patients find spring and autumn more comfortable.

Does it matter whether my hotel is near the clinic?

Yes. You may visit the clinic several times on each trip, including the day after surgery. A short transfer makes those days much easier.

Can I combine treatment with sightseeing?

Keep sightseeing for before surgery or for the second trip. In the first days after surgery, most people rest.
