Twenty questions to ask a clinic in Turkey

Copy these into an email or a WhatsApp message and send the same list to every clinic you're considering. Clear, written answers are a good sign. Vague ones tell you something too.

Short answer

Ask who will treat you and what their qualifications are, how many implants each jaw needs and why, which implant brand they use, what the price includes, how many nights you need on each trip, what the guarantee covers and who pays for travel if something needs fixing, and how aftercare works once you're back in the UK. Get the answers in writing.

Most of these come from the lists published by the General Dental Council and the Oral Health Foundation, adapted for All-on-6. The "good answer" column is our view as a clinic.

About the dentist

QuestionA good answer
1. Who will place my implants?A named dentist, whose profile you can read.
2. Where did they qualify, and where are they registered? The university, the year, and a registration you can look up.
3. How many full-arch cases have they done?A number, or an honest range.
4. Will the dentist speak English, or will there be a translator?Either is fine, as long as you can ask the dentist questions directly.

About the plan

QuestionA good answer
5. How many implants in each jaw, and why?A reason linked to your bone, for example "six, because your X-ray shows enough bone along the jaw".
6. Which implant brand and system?A name, in writing.
7. What are the final teeth made of?The material, and what the temporary teeth are made of too.
8. Might I need a bone graft or sinus lift?"Possibly; your scan will tell us", with the extra cost and time stated in advance.
9. What does the price include? An itemised list. For what a full quote should contain, see allon6cost.co.uk.
10. What are the risks for someone like me?A real conversation about complications, not "there are no risks".

About the trips

QuestionA good answer
11. How many nights on each trip?Specific numbers, and what happens if you need to stay longer.
12. How long between the two trips?A range, with the reason. Healing usually takes around four months.
13. Is the hotel and transfer included?Yes or no, in writing, and whether flights are included (usually not).
14. Will I have fixed teeth between the trips?Usually, yes, with the conditions in which that might not be possible.

About afterwards

QuestionA good answer
15. What does the guarantee cover, and for how long?Written terms, with what isn't covered as well as what is.
16. If something needs fixing, who pays for flights and hotel?A clear answer. Many clinics, including ours, ask you to pay your own flights.
17. Who do I contact once I'm home?A named coordinator and a way to send photos.
18. Will I get an implant passport and my scans?Yes, before you fly home.
19. Will you speak to my UK dentist if needed?Yes.
20. What's your complaints process?Written, with a named person and a response time.

How to use the answers

  1. Put each clinic's answers side by side.
  2. Cross out any clinic that wouldn't answer in writing.
  3. Show the plans to a UK dentist if you can.
  4. Only then compare prices, like for like.

Then run the shortlist through our twelve clinic checks.

Common questions

Is it rude to ask a clinic so many questions?

No. The General Dental Council says not to be afraid to ask lots of questions, even blunt ones, and not to commit to anything until you're satisfied with the answers.

Should I get the answers in writing?

Yes. Written answers can be compared side by side, and you can refer back to them if something changes later.

What if a clinic won't answer?

Treat it as an answer. The NHS lists a lack of information and no mention of aftercare as warning signs.

Plan it with a person, not a form

Thinking about the trip?

Tell us where you're flying from and what you'd like done. A patient coordinator replies in plain English, and will say so honestly if travelling isn't the right step for you.
