Planning the two trips

Entry requirements for UK patients travelling for treatment

Each All-on-6 trip means crossing a border twice. The rules are not complicated, but they do catch people out, especially passport validity. This is a summary of what GOV.UK says, and how it applies to a two-trip treatment.

Short answer

GOV.UK says that to enter Turkey on a British citizen passport, it must have an expiry date at least 150 days after the date you arrive and at least one blank page. British citizen passport holders can visit without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism or business; for medical purposes, GOV.UK says to check the visa information, so confirm with the Turkish Embassy. British prescriptions are not accepted in Turkish pharmacies, and some medicines are controlled. Check the rules again before each trip.

Travel rules are the dullest part of planning All-on-6 abroad, and the part where a small oversight can cost the most. A passport that expires a few months too soon can mean being refused boarding, losing flights and rebooking surgery. The good news is that the rules for UK visitors to Turkey are straightforward. Here is what GOV.UK says, as read in October 2026. Rules can change at short notice, so read the GOV.UK page yourself before each trip.

Passport validity: the 150-day rule

GOV.UK's Turkey advice says that to enter Turkey, your passport must have an expiry date at least 150 days after the date you arrive, and at least one blank page. That is about five months. The point often missed is that All-on-6 involves two trips several months apart. A passport that is fine for the first trip may not be for the second.

Trip two (three to six months later)Check again: the 150 days count from the second arrival date

A simple rule: if your passport expires within a year of your first trip, renew it before you start. The Passport Office can be busy, and you do not want a renewal to delay the second trip when your implants are ready.

Visas

GOV.UK says that if you hold a British citizen passport, you can visit Turkey without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, for business or tourism. It also says that to enter Turkey for education, employment or medical purposes, or in other special cases, you should check the information on applying for a visa. In practice, many UK patients travel for treatment as visitors, but because GOV.UK specifically mentions medical purposes, confirm the position for your own trip with the Turkish Embassy or the official visa information before you go. If you hold another type of British passport, GOV.UK says you will need a visa.

The two All-on-6 trips together are usually around two weeks, well within the 90-day limit even if a third visit is needed.

Arriving in Antalya

On arrival you go through passport control, collect your bags and walk out into the arrivals hall, where clinic drivers usually wait with a name sign. Keep your phone on and charged, with the clinic's WhatsApp number saved, in case of a delay or a change of meeting point. If you booked airport assistance, staff will take you through these steps. Have the hotel address written down as a back-up.

Medicines

GOV.UK makes three points about medicines in Turkey that matter for treatment trips:

  • The legal status of some medicines prescribed or bought in the UK is different in Turkey.
  • British prescriptions are not accepted in Turkish pharmacies.
  • Some common medicines are controlled in Turkey, and you may need documentation.

Take enough of every regular medicine for the whole trip plus a few spare days, in the original packaging, in your hand luggage. If you take strong painkillers, some sleeping tablets or other controlled medicines, check the rules with TravelHealthPro's guidance or the Turkish Embassy, and ask your GP for a letter. Our article on the GP letter explains what to ask for. Medicines prescribed by the clinic after surgery, such as antibiotics and painkillers, are usually supplied in Turkey.

Money

According to GOV.UK, there is no limit on the amount of foreign currency or Turkish lira you can bring into Turkey. When leaving, you must not take Turkish lira worth more than 5,000 US dollars out of the country, and other currency worth more than that must be declared to Turkish Customs. For most patients this only matters if they plan to pay a large balance in cash. Ask the clinic how it prefers to be paid, and keep receipts.

Customs and what not to bring

GOV.UK lists goods you must declare or cannot take into Turkey, including controlled drugs, firearms, offensive weapons such as self-defence sprays, and endangered species. For a treatment trip, the main point is medicines; everything else is the same as for any holiday.

Health and insurance

GOV.UK says the European Health Insurance Card and the Global Health Insurance Card are not valid in Turkey. You need travel insurance, and you should tell your insurer that you are travelling for planned dental treatment and ask what is and is not covered. GOV.UK's foreign travel insurance guidance is a useful checklist. The emergency number in Turkey is 112. See emergency help in Turkey.

Checking travel advice before each trip

GOV.UK's Turkey page is updated whenever conditions change, and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advises against travel to some parts of the country, mainly near the Syrian border, far from the coastal cities where most dental clinics are. You can sign up for email alerts on the GOV.UK page. Read it in the week before each trip.

Common mistakes that cost people trips

  • Checking the passport only once. It passes for trip one and fails the 150-day rule for trip two.
  • Assuming the GHIC will help. It is not valid in Turkey.
  • Packing medicines in the hold. A delayed suitcase leaves you without them for days.
  • Relying on buying medicines locally. British prescriptions are not accepted in Turkish pharmacies.
  • Not declaring the treatment to the insurer. A claim connected to the trip may then be refused.
  • Booking non-refundable flights before the clinic confirms dates.

Companions need the same documents

If someone is travelling with you, they need a passport that meets the same 150-day rule, their own travel insurance and any medicines of their own. The 90-day visa-free limit applies to them too. It is easy to concentrate on the patient's paperwork and forget the companion's; check both at the same time.

Coming home

Returning to the UK is the same as after any holiday. Keep any medicines supplied by the clinic in their packaging with the written instructions, and carry your aftercare notes, implant passport and copies of scans in your hand luggage rather than your suitcase. They are irreplaceable if a bag goes missing, and a UK dentist may need them in the weeks after you get home.

A pre-trip document checklist

  • Passport valid for at least 150 days after arrival, with a blank page
  • Visa position confirmed for travel for treatment
  • Travel insurance with treatment declared; policy number to hand
  • Flight confirmations and the clinic's transfer details
  • Medicines in original packaging, plus your GP summary and any letters
  • The clinic's written plan and price
  • The clinic's phone and WhatsApp numbers saved and written down
  • Bank card that works abroad; a little Turkish lira for small purchases

At Precious Dental the package includes airport and clinic transfers, so once you are through passport control in Antalya you are met in the arrivals hall. Passports, visas and insurance are your responsibility, so please check them before each visit.

If you are travelling on a different passport

Everything above applies to a full British citizen passport. If you hold another type of British passport, or a passport from another country, the rules are different. GOV.UK says holders of other British passports will need a visa. Check with the Turkish Embassy well before you book.

Common questions

How long does my passport need to be valid for Turkey?

GOV.UK says your passport must have an expiry date at least 150 days after the date you arrive in Turkey, and at least one blank page. Check it before each trip, as the second trip is months later.

Do I need a visa for dental treatment in Turkey?

British citizen passport holders can visit for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism or business. GOV.UK says that to enter for medical purposes you should check the visa information. Confirm with the Turkish Embassy for your own trip.

Do the two trips count towards the 90 days?

Yes, days in Turkey within any 180-day period are added together. Two trips of about a week each are well within the limit for most patients.

Can I take my medicines into Turkey?

Yes, in their original packaging and in quantities for your trip. GOV.UK notes that some common medicines are controlled in Turkey and that British prescriptions are not accepted in Turkish pharmacies.

How much money can I take?

GOV.UK says there is no limit on foreign currency or Turkish lira brought into Turkey, but you must not take Turkish lira worth more than 5,000 US dollars out, and must declare other currency over that value when leaving.
